BRADY FALLS SHORT ON PASSER RATING: The passer rating stat is one of the more complicated stats in the NFL. Consider that Tom Brady finished the season with a passer rating of 117.2, the second best mark in NFL history behind Peyton Manning's 121.1 rating in 2004. Yet when comparing Brady's 2007 stats to Manning's 2004 stats, Brady had more completions, a higher completion percentage, more yards, more touchdowns and fewer interceptions.

Manning threw about 80 less passes. Manning's '04 season was an amazing feat of QB offensive efficiency. I think one of the specific factors separating the 2 can be found in the slot receiver. Welker has been phenomenal as a slot man, but he's been more of a chain mover, short yardage possession type receiver. Brandon Stokley was also phenomenal during that '04 season, but he was more of a field stretcher, with more speed and was dangerous on deeper plays. That's not Welker's game. Welker averaged 10.5 per catch on 112 catches. Stokley averaged 15.8 on 68 catches. A little more bang for the buck with Stokley. A little more ball control with Welker. As has been pointed out all season about Welker, the man was often just an extension of the running game. And New England is 2nd in the NFL this year in time of possession at 32:31. Interestingly enough, Indy was only 25th in the league in '04 at 28:45, and this year theyre 19th at just under 30 minutes/game. So, one team's more about ball control, the other was a little more about the big play.
