Patriot News and Moves (7-30-09)

The Patriots announced the signing of Hawaii long snapper Jake Ingram, one of their two sixth-round draft choices. Ingram (6-3, 235) began his college career as a walk-on defensive end in 2005 before making the move to a long snapper. Only draft pick not to sign yet is linebacker Tyrone McKenzie (third round).

Safety Antwain Spann, who was released by the Patriots on Monday, is scheduled to work out for the Buffalo Bills on Friday.

The team announced the release of rookie defensive back Jamar Love, who had signed as a free agent out of Arkansas on April 30, 2009. The Patriots also announced that they have signed DB Herana-Daze Jones, and released OL Jermail Porter.

The Sporting News has put together a ranking of the top 50 coaches of all-time -- in all sports -- and Bill Belichick is No. 20.

The fifth-annual SIRIUS NFL Radio Training Camp Tour will stop at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, August 1. The "Movin' The Chains" show, with Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan, is scheduled to broadcast live from training camp from 2-6 p.m. that day.

Patriot News and Moves

The Patriots announced the signing of rookie safety Patrick Chung. The 5-foot, 11-inch, 212-pound Chung was the first of the Patriots' four second-round picks, taken No. 34 overall. That was the pick the Patriots obtained from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for quarterback Matt Cassel and outside linebacker Mike Vrabel.

The team announced the release of safety Antwain Spann after the Chung signing.

According to an NFL source, Patriots second-year outside linebacker Shawn Crable and veteran left defensive end Ty Warren will start training camp on the team's physically unable to perform list. Crable's inclusion on the list is a surprise, as he participated in organized team activities during the off-season. Warren had surgery on both groins in January and also had a procedure to clean up his right knee in February.

The Patriots also placed rookie wide receiver Brandon Tate on the PUP, who is rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered playing for the University of North Carolina.

Additional PUP players: rookie offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger, offensive tackle Mark LeVoir (shoulder), rookie defensive lineman Darryl Richard and offensive lineman Jermail Porter.

The Patriots are hosting rookie Missouri defensive end/outside linebacker Stryker Sulak. Sulak was a sixth-round draft choice of the Oakland Raiders this year, 199th overall, but was waived before signing a contract. The Raiders selected Sulak with a draft choice they acquired from the Patriots in a draft-day trade -- the Patriots shipped a second-rounder (47th, S Mike Mitchell), fourth-rounder (124th, WR Louis Murphy) and sixth-rounder (199th, Stryker Sulak) for the Raiders' second-round pick (40th, DT Ron Brace).

Pats are now 9 out of 12 (rookie signings)

July 15th - The Patriots have signed rookie defensive lineman Darryl Richard, the second of their two seventh-round picks (No. 234 overall), to a four-year deal. The 6-foot, 4-inch, 290-pound Richard was a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection for Georgia Tech last season, after he had 34 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks. One of Richard's greatest assets -- on and off the field -- is his intelligence. He scored a 37 on the Wonderlic intelligence test given to NFL draft prospects. That was the highest score of any Patriots draft pick, and the top mark among all defensive linemen in the draft.

July 16th - The Patriots have locked up yet another draft pick, signing offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, the fourth of the team's four second-round picks (taken No. 58 overall). The 6-foot, 8-inch, 315-pound Vollmer was born in Düsseldorf, Germany; he did not start playing football until he was 14, but still led his German prep school team to a pair of national titles.

July 16th - The Patriots have reached a deal with third-round pick Wide Receiver Brandon Tate. It is for four years with a $755,000 signing bonus. A wide receiver/kickoff and punt returner, Tate was the first of the Patriots' two third-round picks, taken No. 83 overall. He is one of only nine players in NCAA history to return a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in the same game and he holds the Carolina records for career kickoff and punt returns for scores (six) and single-season combined kickoff and punt TDs (three). Tate is still recovering from his knee injury and did not participate in the off-season practices that were open to the media. He had surgery on Oct. 15 and could start the season on injured reserve.

July 16th - The Patriots are continuing their spree of deals with draft picks. According to a league source, the team and seventh-round pick Julian Edelman have come to terms on a deal. Taken with the first of the team's two seventh-round picks (No. 232 overall), he was a dangerous dual threat quarterback the last three seasons at Kent State. But the Patriots are converting Edelman to wide receiver, where he showed encouraging progress between rookie mini-camp and the team's mandatory mini-camp.

July 17th
- The Patriots have signed another draft pick, locking up nose tackle Ron Brace. Brace hadsagreed to a four-year deal with the club with roughly $2.82 million in guarantees. Brace, a Boston College standout, was the Patriots' second overall selection in the 2009 draft and the second of the team's four second-round picks, taken with the 40th overall selection. The 6-foot, 3-inch, 330-pound Brace is a native of Springfield and attended Worcester Burncoat High School. He teamed with BC's B.J. Raji, a first-round pick of the Green Bay Packers, to give the Eagles one of the top interior defensive line tandems in the nation last season.

July 17 - The Patriots have come to an agreement with fifth-round pick offensive lineman George Bussey. According to a league source, Bussey, an offensive lineman from Louisville, has agreed to a four-year deal. The 6-foot, 2-inch, 306-pound Bussey is the ninth of the Patriots' 12 draft picks to reach a deal with the team.

Note - The only remaining picks who haven't signed or come to terms are the team's top overall pick, safety Patrick Chung, third-round pick linebacker Tyrone McKenzie and sixth-round pick long-snapper Jake Ingram.

Patriots sign draft pick Butler

The Patriots have agreed to a four-year deal with second-round draft pick Darius Butler. A league source has confirmed the details of the contract that Patriots cornerback Darius Butler, the third of the team's four second round picks (No. 41 overall) has agreed to. Butler gets a four-year deal for about $4.125 million.

Butler gets more than $2 million guaranteed in the form of a $440,000 roster bonus and a $1.6275 million guaranteed option bonus. His base salaries will be $310,000 (2009), $395,000 (2010), $582,000 (2011) and $770,000 (2012).

It is a mild surprise that Butler is the first of the Patriots' four second-round picks to sign. He is a client of mega-agent Drew Rosenhaus, who is known as a tough negotiator, but Rosenhaus said it was a "very smooth negotiation."

Butler is the second of the Patriots' 12 draft picks to come to terms on a contract. Offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger agreed to a four-year deal worth approximately $2.2 million on June 12.
