The Patriots announced the signing of rookie safety Patrick Chung. The 5-foot, 11-inch, 212-pound Chung was the first of the Patriots' four second-round picks, taken No. 34 overall. That was the pick the Patriots obtained from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for quarterback Matt Cassel and outside linebacker Mike Vrabel.
The team announced the release of safety Antwain Spann after the Chung signing.
According to an NFL source, Patriots second-year outside linebacker Shawn Crable and veteran left defensive end Ty Warren will start training camp on the team's physically unable to perform list. Crable's inclusion on the list is a surprise, as he participated in organized team activities during the off-season. Warren had surgery on both groins in January and also had a procedure to clean up his right knee in February.
The Patriots also placed rookie wide receiver Brandon Tate on the PUP, who is rehabbing a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered playing for the University of North Carolina.
Additional PUP players: rookie offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger, offensive tackle Mark LeVoir (shoulder), rookie defensive lineman Darryl Richard and offensive lineman Jermail Porter.
The Patriots are hosting rookie Missouri defensive end/outside linebacker Stryker Sulak. Sulak was a sixth-round draft choice of the Oakland Raiders this year, 199th overall, but was waived before signing a contract. The Raiders selected Sulak with a draft choice they acquired from the Patriots in a draft-day trade -- the Patriots shipped a second-rounder (47th, S Mike Mitchell), fourth-rounder (124th, WR Louis Murphy) and sixth-rounder (199th, Stryker Sulak) for the Raiders' second-round pick (40th, DT Ron Brace).
